The Real First Day of Work?
Nope. But, I am
writing this entry from my new cubicle. So, maybe it’s time to start
some work...soon.
I woke up this
morning, and like the three other days so far, I woke up before my alarm
went off. So, I had time to take a nice shower and then I ate
breakfast before I had to catch the shuttle to work. Well, I get to work
at 9am and Sandesh meets us and takes us to the cafeteria to meet Tanu for
some morning tea. Steve, Matt, and Larissa had to catch the bus to
the Orion campus at 10; so obviously there was no rush. 10 o'clock
rolls around and we take them to wait for the bus and we say our
good-byes. I guess I will see them back at the hotel tonight...
Around that
time, Kishen, my new manager meets me and takes me around to meet a whole bunch
of new people that I will be working with. I am glad to be meeting people
and finally starting something. After meeting a few people, he
asked me if my cubicle was ready and if I had my laptop. Both of which,
no. We call Tanu, who called someone to get my cubicle cleaned out.
Someone had left all of his stuff in it, and it wasn't supposed to be
there. Security had no problem in taking everything and putting it in to
cardboard boxes.
Now, to get
my laptop. I go into the IS room where my laptop was. This was not a
very big room; it was really only 20'x30' with one continuous desk running
along the wall inside. Yet, somehow, there were 17 people working in
there. Everyone was on a phone or working on a computer. I really
don't know how they maintained order in there. So, amidst the chaos, they
have my laptop and they configured it for me. My email is supposed to
start working soon, as soon as the servers update from the US mirror.
But, the internet works! So I am happy. Finally, I have some reliable internet
to browse, not stealing from some unsecured Linksys network that we find at the
hotel.
Now it’s lunch
time! Sandesh comes to pick me up on his way to the cafeteria where we
met Tanu and one of Sandesh's friends. The cafeteria is in my
building, so don't have to walk that far for food. I am really
enjoying the local Indian cuisine, the new flavors and spices are
great! But, like I said before, I really could go for a
hamburger... mmm, just thinking about it makes me hungry.
That's enough
food talk. Back to work. Wait, I haven't started anything
yet. After lunch with Sandesh and Tanu, I come back down to my cubicle
and wait for Kishen to come find me. We are meeting a few other people in
regards to my mystery project. Up to this point in time, I haven't heard
anything about what I was going to be doing or what it really involved
technically. I have been given the same job description for a month now,
and it was extremely broad and I needed to know a large range of topics.
After explaining the idea and walking me through the task that needed to be
done when this project was done, I was finally given something that I wanted to
hear.
I will be
working in a Linux environment, coding in Java and C++, using a MySQL backend,
and making everything functional and look pretty in Adobe Flex. What fun I get
to have!
